Workshop in Coimbra Highlights Advances in Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring

Workshop sobre deteção, geolocalização e monitorização de incêndios florestais

On February 27, 2023, the workshop on forest fire detection, geolocation, and monitoring took place at the Vila Galé Hotel in Coimbra.

The event consisted of presentations showcasing the results of various research projects funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

Among the four projects sponsoring the event, all of which were also funded by the FCT, was the Eye in the Sky project. This project had the opportunity to present its objectives, activities conducted to date, and achieved results.

WORKSHOP – Data management for detection, geolocation and monitoring of forest fires

cover workshop on data management for detection, geolocation and monitoring of forest fires

On Monday 27 February, at the Hotel Vila Galé in Coimbra, a workshop on data management for detection, geolocation and monitoring of forest fires will take place. This workshop will consist in the presentation of results from several research projects on this subject, namely:

FireLoc – Where Is the Fire? Identification, Positioning and Monitoring of Forest Fires with Data Provided by Citizens

FoRESTER – Sensor Network Combined with Fire Propagation Modelling Integrated into a Decision Support System for Forest Fire Fighting

FirePuma – Forest Fire Prevention through Monitoring to Reduce Uncertainty

Floresta Limpa – Automatic and Participated Surveillance of Forest Fire Protection Zones

IMFire – Intelligent Fire Management

Firefront – Real-Time Mapping and Prediction of Wildfire Progression by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Eye in the Sky – Use of High Altitude Balloons for Decision Support in Firefighting Operations

After each session of presentations there will be a period for questions. In the final phase of the workshop, a Panel Discussion on “Integrating data for the detection, geolocation and monitoring of extreme events – potentials, limitations and risks” is planned.

Considering that this event may interest you, we invite you to attend this workshop in person or remotely. Registration is free (including coffee-break and lunch, for those present) but mandatory using the following LINK: https://forms.gle/aSvkTwXDHL6UQPPz9

Presentation of work at ICFFR 2022

Paper presentation of Advances in Forest Fire Research 2022 during ICFFR 2022

As part of the 9th edition of the International Conference on Forest Fire Research (www.adai.pt/icffr), which took place between 11 and 18 November this year, researcher Alexandra Moutinho presented her work, developed within the scope of the Eye in the Sky.

Authors: Moutinho, Alexandra; Sousa, Maria João; Almeida, Miguel; Bergano, Miguel; Henriques, Diogo; Silva, Dario; Barbosa, Domingos; Nero, Luis; Navarro, Antonio

This work was published in the book “Advances in Forest Fire Research“, published in October 2022 (http://books.uc.pt/book?book=1232)

Participation in Naval-REX’22 – Naval Robotics Exercise 2022

Eye in the Sky - Exercício de Robótica Naval 2022

On September 6, 2022, the Eye in the Sky project participated in the Naval REX’22 – Naval Robotics Exercise 2022, at the Navy’s Operational Experimentation Center (CEOM) in Tróia.

In this Technological Free Zone, and on board NRP Sines, it was possible to test and demonstrate the ability to launch a balloon onboard a vessel. The balloon carried a simple spherical payload acting as a probe, which was released remotely over the sea.

This test allowed to test and demonstrate the ability to remotely release a payload from the balloon and to track its position in real-time at a control station, in this case at the NRP Sines. The released payload was then recovered and brought back to the NRP Sines.

A special thanks to the Portuguese Navy, the Naval Academy and NRP Sines for the opportunity.
